Adequate nutrition is essential for a healthy pregnancy. If you’re pregnant and struggle with food insecurity, know that resources are available.
The affiliated providers through Missouri’s Alternatives to Abortion Program can help you find food assistance programs and meet this need. There is hope; we’ll explain the various types of programs below.
Food Assistance: Why Does it Matter?
Proper nutrition supports good health for you and your baby. When you receive the right nutrients during pregnancy, you support your baby’s growth and development.
However, knowing where to begin when seeking food assistance can be challenging. Perhaps you don’t know who to speak to or what resources are available. We’ll outline four common programs that can provide relief.
1. Special Supplemental Nutrition Program for Women, Infants, and Children (WIC)
WIC can provide supplemental foods, nutrition education, and healthcare referrals to low-income pregnant and postpartum women. Infants and children up to age five may also be eligible.
This program is a good option if you meet the requirements and seek ongoing assistance; it can help you feed yourself and your family.
2. Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP)
SNAP is another federal program that can provide relief. If you qualify for this program, you’ll receive assistance in adding to your grocery budget, which will help you afford more nutritious foods.
3. Temporary Assistance for Needy Families (TANF)
TANF can help temporarily with various needs after hardship, including if you struggle with food insecurity. If eligible, you’ll receive financial resources to provide the help you need.
4. Food Pantries/Banks
Though a more informal method than a government program, many communities offer fresh and prepackaged nutritious food through food pantries/banks. While you may need to show an EBT card, proof of income, or other documentation, know that these locations are meant to support you when you need them most.
Checking in with your local food pantry or bank can help you learn eligibility requirements and how often you can pick up food. Remember, help is available; you don’t have to figure out your next steps alone.
