Your Safety is the First Priority
Before you learn about potential housing options, it’s critical to take a moment to consider your current situation. What are your motivations for seeking another place to live?
If you are experiencing abuse, know that you deserve better, and it is never your fault. Support is available to help you leave this situation. The National Domestic Violence Hotline provides 24/7 resources and aid.
Even if you are not in an abusive situation, you can still face challenges. For example, some women struggle with substance abuse and need specialized support. Or they’re facing eviction and need a safe living environment until they find more permanent housing.
You have resources. We’ll explain some of your options below.
Women’s Shelters
Women’s shelters provide immediate relief from challenging or dangerous situations. They usually offer hot meals, showers, a place to sleep, job assistance, and more. If you already have children, some shelters can accommodate their needs and offer additional services.
The staff members at women’s shelters are used to seeing all kinds of situations. Whether you are fleeing an abusive relationship or lack financial resources, they will help you pinpoint the next steps, refer you to social workers who can connect you to community resources, and address specific concerns.
This type of housing is a short-term solution. It can ensure your safety as you decide what to do next.
Crisis Centers
Crisis centers often work with women who have experienced domestic violence, have mental health concerns, and more. They can offer emergency help and resources; some provide short-term housing solutions.
These centers focus on your community’s needs, so they have specific expertise in the issues you may be facing.
Government Assistance Programs
Emergency housing vouchers provided through the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development can help you find immediate housing options. Individuals and families who are homeless, at risk of becoming homeless, have experienced sexual assault, or are in abusive relationships (among others) may be eligible for these vouchers.
Social workers and other professionals can help determine whether you qualify for a voucher, assist in completing applications, and more.
Non-Profit Organizations
Non-profit organizations (i.e., maternity homes and pregnancy resource centers) can provide additional support. Whether that’s through direct housing assistance, community resource referrals, or even emergency funds, these organizations exist to help pregnant women and their families.
Every organization is different, but it’s important to remember that pregnancy resource centers and maternity homes want to help you succeed. You are not the first woman to seek housing assistance, and these organizations can tap into local resources to help you find what you need.
Missouri’s Alternatives to Abortion Program can help you get started.
