The Alternatives to Abortion Program offers services to help women carry their unborn child to term instead of having an abortion. This program also helps support women after making this choice by finding resources to help with caring for a child or by helping women learn more about adoption, if they choose.

Domestic Abuse: What Are the Signs?

You never deserve abuse or mistreatment of any kind. No matter your situation, you have a right to be treated with respect, compassion, and love.

Domestic abuse, also known as domestic violence, occurs between people in an intimate relationship. It isn’t limited to physical acts or intimidation; emotional and sexual abuse can also occur.

Continue reading to learn more about the signs of domestic abuse. Remember, there is hope. Missouri’s Alternatives to Abortion Program includes providers who offer domestic abuse protection resources and can help you lead a safe, healthy life.

Signs You Should Know

With domestic abuse, there is a power imbalance in a relationship. The abuser seeks to control and intimidate their partner.

It may be challenging to know whether you’re in an abusive relationship until your situation worsens. Or you may be afraid to reach out, especially if your partner has threatened to harm you.

These are some of the signs that domestic abuse is occurring:

Physical Violence

Hitting, pushing, shoving, kicking, etc., is never acceptable. The abuser may physically abuse you, your children, or your pets.

Sexual Assault or Harassment

You may be forced to engage in sexual acts or behavior against your will. Or the abuser may force you to witness a sexual act.

Emotional Abuse

Emotional abuse covers many different behaviors. The abuser may put you down or insult you in public or in private. They may call you names or isolate you from family or friends.

You may be forced to stay home instead of attending school, going to work, going to doctor’s appointments, etc.

Controlling Behavior

A major element of domestic abuse is control. The abuser may control what you wear, what you eat, your spending, and more.

When they are in control of your life, they feel powerful.

Jealous Behavior

The abuser may express extreme possessiveness or jealousy. They may accuse you of cheating or showing interest in others.

Threats and Intimidation

When you speak up, the abuser feels powerless. They want you to remain in the abusive environment so they do not lose control.

As a result, you may be threatened with violence, ultimatums, etc., if you leave. These threats can include your children or loved ones.

I’m in an Abusive Relationship. What Should I Do?

If you believe you’re in an abusive relationship, assistance is available. No matter how dire your situation is, you aren’t alone. There is hope, help, and healing.

Abuse often escalates during pregnancy. You and your baby are at risk of harm, and domestic violence can result in pregnancy complications like preterm birth and fetal loss.

The abuser may also want to control your pregnancy by making decisions for you, coercing you into having an abortion, and more. You and your baby deserve to be safe and protected.

Call 911 if you are in immediate danger. Nothing is ever worth your life. You can also call the National Domestic Violence Hotline for 24/7 support.

The providers through Missouri’s Alternatives to Abortion Program can connect you to domestic abuse protection resources, including material assistance, emergency support, and housing. They will help you and your baby find safety.

You are eligible for the A2A program if you are a pregnant woman who:

  • Wants to carry your unborn child to term instead of having an abortion
  • Is a United States resident who lives in Missouri
  • Makes less than 185% of the federal poverty level based on your latest tax filing
