The Alternatives to Abortion Program offers services to help women carry their unborn child to term instead of having an abortion. This program also helps support women after making this choice by finding resources to help with caring for a child or by helping women learn more about adoption, if they choose.

Affordable Housing Resources for Pregnant Women: Finding a Safe Place to Call Home

A safe, stable home plays a critical role as you navigate pregnancy and prepare to meet your child. However, if you struggle to find housing or live in an unpredictable or dangerous environment, know that resources are available.

The providers under Missouri’s Alternatives to Abortion Program can help you plan your next steps. Continue reading to learn more about how our network can benefit you.

Types of Affordable Housing Resources

Affordable housing takes many forms and can help you find safety and peace of mind. Housing options vary based on your income level, location, and whether you have short-term or long-term needs.

We’ll describe some of the options available.

Maternity Homes

Maternity homes (also called “residential programs”) provide no-cost shelter, programming, educational opportunities, and other resources to pregnant and parenting women. This may be a good option if you want wraparound support, assistance finding a job or future housing, and a strong sense of community.

Application requirements for maternity homes vary widely, but most allow pregnant mothers to stay for up to a year or two after the birth of their child. This timing provides an opportunity to adjust to parenthood or receive additional resources if you choose to place your child for adoption.

Maternity homes can help as you transition into your new role as a mother or add another child to your family.

Women’s Shelters

Though not a long-term solution, women’s shelters can be a viable option for pregnant and parenting women who need emergency housing, must leave an abusive situation, struggle with substance abuse, and more.

These shelters often provide hot meals, showers, and job assistance. You’ll have a way to “get back on your feet” while ensuring your safety.

Remember, you deserve to be treated with love and respect. Abuse of any kind is always unacceptable, and the National Domestic Violence Hotline offers 24/7 support. They can even help you find women’s shelters and other resources in your area.

Subsidized & Public Housing

Financial concerns shouldn’t stop you from having a safe, comfortable living environment. Many areas provide public housing for low-income families. Pregnant women may qualify for these units, especially if they are single parents or demonstrate financial need.

Additionally, subsidized housing (such as those provided through the Housing Choice Voucher Program – Section 8) can help you find a range of options for your family. These units may be apartments, townhomes, or single-family homes—which can provide greater flexibility and meet your needs.

There are multiple options for affordable housing, and it’s natural to feel overwhelmed. Missouri’s Alternatives to Abortion Program has providers ready to support you as you consider your housing choices.
