The Alternatives to Abortion Program offers services to help women carry their unborn child to term instead of having an abortion. This program also helps support women after making this choice by finding resources to help with caring for a child or by helping women learn more about adoption, if they choose.

How to Give Your Unborn Baby the Nutrients They Need

There’s much to think about during pregnancy, and you’re likely wondering what your unborn baby needs to grow. This may seem like a lot of pressure, but making simple dietary changes can set you and your child up for success.

Missouri’s Alternatives to Abortion Program has contractors and providers who can provide material needs, including nutritious food, to eligible mothers.

Continue reading to learn more about supplying your unborn baby with the necessary nutrients and whether you’re eligible for the program.

How Do I Know What My Baby Needs?

A crucial step when determining your baby’s needs is to speak with your OB/GYN. They can discuss what foods you should eat and your recommended fluid intake as well as answer any questions.

In the meantime, here are some essential nutrients to prioritize during pregnancy:

1. Calcium

Calcium helps your baby develop strong bones and teeth. It also supports a healthy heart, nerves, and muscles.

Eating a well-balanced diet with foods like milk, orange juice, and yogurt can help you get enough calcium. Taking a prenatal vitamin is also essential.

2. Iodine

Hard-boiled eggs, baked cod, and more can help supply your body with iodine, which helps your baby’s metabolism.

Your prenatal vitamin may also contain iodine.

3. Iron

Iron is critical for your baby to produce hemoglobin, a protein that carries oxygen to red blood cells. Your OB/GYN may recommend an iron supplement, especially because you need far more iron during pregnancy.

Iron-rich foods include lean beef and lentils.

4. Vitamin A

Vitamin A aids in the development of your baby’s organs, bones, and eyes, as well as their central nervous, circulatory, and respiratory systems.

Carrots, sweet potatoes, and spinach all have this key vitamin.

5. Vitamin C

Vitamin C helps your baby build healthy teeth and gums. It also supports collagen, which helps form cartilage, skin, bones, and more.

Broccoli, bell peppers, and tomatoes can help ensure you receive the necessary amount of vitamin C since your body can’t produce it on its own.
